Born in 1940 in Fez, Fatema Mernissi studied in Rabat, France and the United States where she hosted many seminars and has been teaching since the 80s at Mohammed V University in Rabat.

Renowned sociologist and writer, Mernissi, who identified herself as "Islamic feminist", led a parallel struggle for equality and the empowerment of women, and founded the "civic caravans" and the group "women, families, children."

Mernissi, who was interested in the status of women in Islam, has written several books that have been translated into many languages, including "Sex, ideology and Islam", "Political Harem", "Forgotten Sultanes", " The World is not a harem "and" Chahrazade is not Moroccan. "

In May 2003, she received, along with Susan Sontag, the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award.

In November 2004, her rich biography and her fight for gender equality were rewarded by the Erasmus Prize, granted by the Dutch Erasmus Foundation, tied with Syrian writer Sadik Jalal Al-Azm and the Iranian Abdulkarim Soroush.

Fatema Mernissi was also chosen in 2003 as a member of the Wise Committee for the Dialogue of Civilizations, initiated by the European Commission under the presidency of Romano Prodi.
