Moroccan Sahara Issue: Salvadoran Expert Highlights Algeria's Isolation on the International Scene

San Salvador - A Salvadoran expert in regional integration and international issues has highlighted the isolation of Algeria on the international scene in its support for the Polisario and its worn-out theses. In an analysis on the Moroccan Sahara issue and peace in the region, Napoleón Campos stressed that "the Algerian regime is not a valid or legitimate interlocutor" to achieve a solution to this conflict.

Because, he noted, in Algeria "only a new democratic government that respects international commitments and treaties can be a major player in the negotiations". For the Salvadoran researcher, "just like the moral and political decadence of the old guerrillas of Central America (...), the time is for the decadence of the Polisario front in Tindouf, in Algeria, which is experiencing destabilization due to the corruption which prevails largely there, the lack of democracy in the camps and the submission to power in Algeria".

The specialist in international issues has also affirmed that no resolution of the Security Council or the General Assembly of the United Nations recognizes the Polisario Front as a representative entity while the legitimacy of local elected representatives is clearly recognized, noting that the separatists and their so-called SADR have no legitimacy.

He also underscored the relevance of the Moroccan autonomy proposal for the settlement of this artificial conflict, noting that this plan is part of a process of democratization, reconciliation and political, economic and cultural openness to the world, which has been engaged by Morocco for several years now. Regarding relations between the Kingdom and the countries of Central America, the Salvadoran expert recalled the establishment of the Morocco-SICA Forum (Central American integration system) which is intended to be a fundamental legal instrument to strengthen links between the Kingdom and the countries of Central America in the economic, technical, scientific, educational and cultural areas and to promote a South-South cooperation model. "Morocco, which is a real link between Africa and Europe, represents for the Central American countries a gateway to the European market," he said, adding that the Kingdom, thanks to its leadership in the region in various fields, can contribute to the elaboration of a free trade treaty with the countries of Central America as part of a South-South partnership.
