France has expelled a Tunisian imam accused of spreading anti-Semitic views and denigrating women at the Omar mosque in the 11th arrondisement in Paris.

The French interior ministry said Muhammad Hammami, 77, was guilty of "deliberate, repeated and unacceptable provocations".He was arrested at his home and flown straight to Tunis, although he has lived in France for much of his life,according to the Huffington Post.

"In his sermons," Hammami "encouraged violent jihad, made anti-Semitic remarks and justified the use of violence and corporal punishment against women," added the ministry.French officials say that Mr Hammami frequently made anti-Semitic speeches and called for "violent jihad" from his pulpit at the Omar Mosque.France's Interior Ministry said in a statement that Hammami was expelled for his "deliberate, repeated and unacceptable provocations," which constitute a threat to France's society and security.
 
He also reportedly called for adulterous wives to be whipped to death and defended violence against women.
 
Hammami, whose assets were frozen by the government in May, has denied all the allegations.He was deported to Tunisia,where he is a citizen,on Tuesday.

The deportation coincides with the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to France. He is due to visit the Jewish school in Toulouse where 3 children and a teacher were shot dead by Mohamed Mehra.
