Mauritanian NGO calls UN Human rights council to conduct investigation on missing persons in Tindouf
The NGO "Memory and justice" made the plea this Monday at the UN human rights council for an international investigation on cases of forced disappearance and execution in the Tindouf camps, in order to turn "dark pages of 40 years of impunity.

"Families of hundreds of missing, killed or detained persons denounce the silence over these despicable crimes", said Sidi Ahmed Achleychil, the association secretary general during a plenary session, calling "international organizations to set up a fact-finding commission to put an end to the impunity enjoyed by the torturers whose hands are soiled by the blood of innocent victims".

The activist, who had himself experienced torture drew the Council attention on "the serious abuses endured by thousands of Sahrawis for decades in south-western Algeria" and denounced the appalling living conditions of populations in Tindouf.

He deplored the absence of justice and legality and the calamitous food, education and health policies, insisting that aid packages sent to the camps are sold in neighboring countries.

He also noted that human rights activists are violently repressed in these camps where total insecurity, robberies, rape and smuggling prevail.
