Malian army announced it regained control of Konna

The Malian army announced that it had taken full control, Thursday, on 17 January , of the town of Konna, in the center of the country. In addition, nearly one hundred Nigerian soldiers and Togo, the first elements of the West African force deployed in Mali, arrived in Bamako.

The situation the western front of the conflict is moredifficult where, according to the Malian media, the French soldiers engaged in a ground operation have arrived just outside Diabali, 360km from the capital,which is heldby the Islamists.

Malian troops have deployed in Banamba, a town situated between Bamako and the border with Mauritania, to prevent the Islamists from fleeing into Mauritania or crossng the border.

A hundred troops from Nigeria and Togo arrived in Bamako on Thursday. The Ecowas force of 3.300 and 2,000 Chadian troops are planned to take over eventually from the French forces. Some 2,000 soldiers are expected by January 26 in Bamako and about 1,300 in the following weeks.  France has deployed 1,400 men in Mali. According to the French authorities, this figure will soon reach 2,500 soldiers.
 
Eight West African countries - Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Senegal, Niger, Guinea, Ghana and Burkina Faso - Chad are contributing to the Ecowas force. In total, there will be approximately 5,300 soldiers from the African continent deployed in Mali.
