The challenges facing Mali "must be solved" through the preservation of national unity and territorial integrity
of that country, said Sunday in Algiers the Minister in charge of Maghreb and African Affairs , Abdelkader Messahel.

This position, that Algeria has always expressed and reiterated, "is consistant with those of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), United Nations and all partners, Messahel said after a working session with the Mr Lamine Sow  Malian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation.

The Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sadio Lamine Sow, said on  Sunday in Algiers  that they had frankly discussed all issues concerning  the conflict in Mali with Algerian officials and said the two parties were on the same track and the same wavelength. The difficulties faced by the Mali must be solved within the framework of preserving national unity and territorial integrity  of that country, he said.

There is a space for negotiation between the Malian government and those groups who agree with a  political solution that preserves national unity and the  territorial integrity of Mali and taking into account the legitimate claims northern populations.

Algeria,  is familiar with the situation in neighboring Mali tcan act as a mediator between the Tuareg in the North  and Mali's government in Bamako. Algeria has been asked to assist in resolving the conflict in northern Mali now under the control of Islamist groups .

Many ministers from the region and Ecowas have paid several  visits to Algieria recently which is a key country in the search for a solution to the situation facing Mali. This is the preferred option but the military option no longer seems excluded.

Algeria arranged the July 2006 peace agreement in the Kidal region (north-eastern Mali) between the political wing of the Tuareg rebellion of the time and the Malian government.

Finally, Messahel said his country had offered more than 5,220 tons of humanitarian aid to Mali and reviewed the agreement of 10 million that is part of credit line to help the country. The Tuareg groups in Mali are divided and the MNLA has clashed with Mujao and Ansar dine. This may give negotiators an opportunity as they aredisunited.

Algeria still has seven of its diplomats who were kidnapped from the Algerian consulate in Gao who have not yet been released.
