In an extraordinary summit in Abidjan on Tuesday ECOWAs joined other international bodies in suspending Mali from membership of the decision making bodies of the block.
Mali suspended from ECOWAS
ECOWAS called for a military force to be on standby to deal with Mali as necessary and threatened sanctions against leaders of Mali's coup. An ECOWAS delegation of The presidents of Cote d'Ivoire, Burkino Faso, Niger, Benin
and Liberia will visit Mali in the coming days to reason with the coup leaders.

There was a demonstration of support for the coup in Bamako yesterday but its leaders are facing gowing tough international and local opposition. Ecowas  does not have an army and it may take sometime to assemble forces. Meanwhile the MNLA and other Tuareg allies are active in the field. The ousted President Amadou Toumani Toure is still in hiding and a number of his cabinet ministers are in custody.

the African Union and ECOWAS in particular are keen to achieve an African solution to the problem and to see democracy restored to Mali. If African leaders can help to provide a regional soution to some of the problems faced by the Sahel countries it would be a very significant development.
