The Prime Minister Prime Minister Cheick Modibo Diarra has said he was ashamed that Mali's interim president was beaten unconscious by protesters on Monday.

Suspicion surtrounded the fact that soldiers guarding the presidential palace allowed the crowd to enter and attack President Traore who is over 70 yars old..

Ecowas spokesman Sunny Ugoh told the BBC he was shocked at the events that unfolded following their departure and said sanctions were now a possibility.

"We're rather shocked that this kind of incident would happen barely 24 hours after a delegation from Ecowas managed to secure an agreement with the military.

The protest was organised by pro-putsch coalition Committee of Malian Patriotic Organisations (COPAM) who held a two-day meeting ending with a resolution late Tuesday night that Sanogo would head the interim government.

There is now an urgent need to restablish stability in Bamako with over 350,000 Malian refugees fleeing the fighting in the North and Tuareg rebels  from Ansar Dine and elements of Al Qaeda consoldidating their hold on the region and threatening neighbouring countries in the Sahel.
