Libya: Thousands mourn Omran Shaaban who was one of Gaddafi’s captors

A tragic reminder of continued revenge killings and a national failure to achieve reconciliation revealled itself with the death from injuries inflicted by his captors at Bani Walid of Omran Shaaban one of the young men who captured former dictator Gaddafi in a drainage pipe in Sirte.

Thousands turned out in Misrata as Omran Shaaban's body was carried to a stadium for funeral prayers.More than 10,000 people gathered to mourn one of the Libyan rebels credited with capturing ex-leader Muammar Gaddafi last year.

He died on Tuesday after being kidnapped, shot and tortured in the pro Gaddafi stronghold of Bani Walid where he was shot and paralysed. He was tortured over a period of 50 days with razor cuts to his chest. He was finally released through the mediation of Mohammed  Magarief, Libya's interim leader and president of the ruling General National Congress (GNC). He was taken to Paris but died on Tuesday and his body was flown to his home towm of Misrata.

The GNC mourned the "loss of a brave hero" and has said it will take all necessary measures to bring the perpetrators to justice, according to a statement issued on the official Lana news agency.

 In the capital of Tripoli, several hundred protesters gathered outside the headquarters of the National Congress to demand that the government avenge Shaaban's death.
 
Shaaban's family said that he and three friends had been on their way home to the western city of Misrata from a vacation in July when they were attacked by gunmen in an area called el-Shimekh near Bani Walid. They said that Omran never  received a promised reward of a million Libyan dinars for gaddafi's capture.
