Libya: Government warns against disrupting state work

The government has criticised those who “disrupt the work of the government and state institutions in an irresponsible way” at a press conference in Tripoli.

In the statement, the government spokesman criticised the shutting down of public facilities,  highway robberies, breaking into buildings and taking control of them saying they caused huge losses to the state, according to the Libya Herald.

Libya has been plalgued by disruption by armed militias and strike's by National Oil Corporation(NOC)  workers who closed oilfields over the lcation of NOC headquarters in the East and Tebu demonstratorswho  closed the Sharara oilfield near Obari for nearly two weeks over claims that they were not being given the opportunity to work on the fields.Protestors also occupied the the Zueitina oil terminal demanding work.

Prime Minister Ali Zeidan said that the protests had cost Libya nearly $350 million in lost revenues, and said the state would not give into blackmail. He added that the government would use all measures to protect Libya's vital installations.The government would seek to prosecute those  in any demonstration causing major disruption to the state,the Tripoli Post reported.  This firmer stance on economic and security issues is likely to be welcomed by investors in the country including oil and gas exploration companies who have long complained about the
security issues in Libya.
