Libya: 150 Tunisian workers kidnapped by armed rebels

The kidnapping strongly suggests vengeance: Some 150 Tunisians, and even more, working for an oil company were kidnapped on Monday by armed rebels in the Libyan city of Zawiya near the border, on the northwest coast of Libya, said the official news agency TAP announced on Tuesday.

These kidnappings follow the arrest in Ben Guerdane (Tunisia) of four Libyans in possession of narcotics," said
Lassâad Jamoussi, Chapter President of the Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights in Sfax, reported TAP.

Consular Tunisian officials in Libya  are trying to find common ground for the release of Tunisian (between 150 and 164 people,according to sources). As for the four Libyans arrested in Tunisia, they held large amounts of drugs.

The border area between the two countries has been the scene of several incidents since 2011 the report by Tap concludes.

On  8 March 2011 Tunisian Vocational Training and Employment Minister Abdelwahab Maâter and his Libyan counterpart, Mustafa Ali Rajabani, signed  a memorandum of understanding in which both parties committed to facilitating and simplifying procedures for the assignment and transfer of Tunisian workers to Libya , according to a report in Maghareba.com.
