Jamaa El Fna under the spell of "demigod" Shah Rukh Khan

As usual, the Jamaa El Fna square was packed with people, but once its snake charmers have given way to a "prince charming." On Saturday night, thousands of Moroccans cheered Shah Rukh Khan, 6the Indian "demigod" in the Marrakech Film Festival.

For its 12th edition, this international festival, which runs until Dec. 8 in the ocher city, makes a "special tribute" to Indian cinema  which is very popular in Morocco, according to organizers.

Invited for the occasion, the icon of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan was cheered by thousands of people on the famous square, a mecca of tourism in Morocco, where a giant screen was installed for the projection preview and full airing of his last film ("Until my last breath," Yash Chopra).

"I am pleased to present the star, the icon, the demigod of Indian cinema: Shah Rukh Khan", announced one of the leaders of IFFM. The appearance of the star in some 80 films to his credit triggers cries of thousands of young people present, despite a gloomy and cold weather for the season.

Before the screening of "King Khan", actor-producer 47 years but true showman and presenter, is responsible for warming up the atmosphere, providing songs and dances for more than half an hour on stage. The public is actually loose.

"This is the first time I see Shah Rukh Khan. This is a dream. He was two feet away from me. It is so simple and modest, it looks like!" Enthuses to AFP Khadija Ariba, a young student of Marrakech.

"I know all his films. Individuals who are treated with - like love, injustice, humanity - we speak. He is the prince for most girls," she says.

By December 8, the International Festival of Marrakech (MIFF) must then reward one of 15 films in competition, including "Touch of the Light" (the Taiwanese Chang Jung-Chi), presented opening "The Attack", a film by Franco-Belgian Lebanese Ziad Doueiri, "Fishing Days" in Patagonia and Argentina's Carlos Sorin "Like a lion", the French Samuel Collardey.

The jury is composed of the Canadian Marie-Josée Croze, the American James Gray, the Moroccan Jillali Ferhati or the French Lambert Wilson.
