Israel voices concerns over Egyptian tanks in Sinai.

Mercredi 22 Août 2012

Egypt has moved M60 tanks into Sinai to gtuard the town of Al Arish. Israel ha scomplaine that this is a breach of the 1973 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt which saw the return of Sinai to Egypt on condition that Egyptian military presence in Sinai was limited.
Israel voices concerns over Egyptian tanks in Sinai.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for Egypt to act over the terrorists in Sinai and now it has done so  he is said to have demandsed that the tanks be withdrawn. In fact the Israeli's are worried by the prcedent it sets rather than  the troops and equipment deployed. The peace treaty in 1973 meant that Israel could concentrate on Syria,Lebanon and Gaza without  fear of Egyptian forces on its border. That strategic balance which has lasted from 1973 to the present day may now be changing, it was as significant as the balance between East and West during the Cold War.

Now Syria has imploded and its civil war has spread to Lebanon and may engulf Jordan. Also involved is Iran which is seenas the great enemy of Israel and the West. Turkey is also poised for further involvement. Israel may be faced with a situation it cannot control and it has its nuclear arsenal. The Muslim Brotherhood hates Israel and wants to reject the treaty. However the Egyptian Army depends on the $1.3 billion USD military aid and President Morsi needs to have good relations with the US. He will hesitate to reject the treaty with Israel. He goes to  China on the 27 August, the Iran on the 30 Augut for a Non Aligned Summit and then the US on 23 September. He is attending a UN meeting but President Obama did invite him for September although no date was set. The President is facing an election in November and like all American Presidents cannot afford to allienate the Jewish vote. Hopefully by then the arguing over Egyptian tanks  in the Sinai will be resolved and Obama will meet with Morsi. It may be his chance to return to the Middle East scene since the failures and disillusion following his Cairo speech.
