Interior Minister discusses security cooperation with Spanish counterpart

Rabat - Interior Minister Mohand Laenser held talks, Tuesday in Rabat, with his Spanish counterpart Jorge Fernandez Diaz on issues of common interest, notably security and the European Union.

This meeting, the fifth of its kind between the two officials, was an opportunity to assess the progerss made since their last meeting, Minister Laenser told the press at the end of this meeting, which was attended by Minister-Delegate for the Interior, Charkhi Draiss.

"The results are quite positive regarding the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking, and illegal immigration," said the minister, referring to the measures taken to achieve a quadripartite cooperation (G4 ) to include France and Portugal, in addition to Morocco and Spain.

Laenser said a meeting will be held in October in Madrid to discuss the progress made since the last meeting in January between the four countries.

For his part, the Spanish official said the meeting discussed common interest issues, including the fight against organized crime and human trafficking, adding that for Spain, which is the EU borders, the fight against these phenomena is not possible without a real and effective cooperation with Morocco.

He said that the visit of King Juan Carlos I of Spain in Morocco is "historic" because it confirms that "relations between Morocco and Spain transcend political circumstances.
