The Conference seeks to bring together 50 researchers and experts from North Africa, Europe and America to discuss and assess the field of anthropology in the Maghreb during the past century, and to draw attention to various contemporary works on the region's rich culture (religious, musical, linguistic, legal, and urban).

The event will pay a tribute to Georges Lapassade, the French philosopher who designed a research program called "Words of Essaouira" more than 30 years ago with the aim to collect and analyze songs by sailors, artisans and craftsmen of the city.

The conference will discuss a number of theme including "Georges Lapassade, an atypical trajectory of an anthropologist from Béarn to Essaouira", "Anthropology of Morocco: rise and decadence, "and "Teaching anthropology in the Maghreb today: benefits and proposals."
