Lisbon - The exhibition "Morocco and Europe: six centuries in the eyes of the other" opened Monday night in the ornate Jeronimo monastery in Lisbon.
Inauguration of Exhibition
Held under the patronage of HM King Mohammed VI and Portugal's President Cavaco Silva Antonio, the exhibition is held by the Moroccan Embassy in Lisbon, in partnership with the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad, the Brussels-based Center for Jewish-Moroccan Culture and the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, on the sidelines of the Lisbon Forum, held on September 15-16.

The exhibition is a true testament to the density and the depth of friendship between Morocco and Europe, especially Portugal, Morocco's ambassador in Lisbon, Karima Benyaich, said at the opening ceremony.

Such an event would promote understanding of the historical ties between Morocco and Europe, showing the public the diversity and richness of the exchanges that open a common horizon to both shores of the Mediterranean, she said.

For Benyaich, it is a journey through six centuries of political, economic, cultural and human interaction which shows that Morocco is a bridge between North and South, East and west, and a nation which has promoted the values of openness and otherness.

Consisting of paintings, archives and photographs, the exhibition is divided into seven modules that explore the evolving relationship between Morocco and Europe, notably Portugal, from the 16th century to the present. The aim is to outdo clichés and promote mutual respect and dialogue in the Mediterranean, according to organizers.

The exhibition, which runs till October, has already stopped in Rabat, Paris, Brussels, Antwerp and Limoges and is expected in Madrid.
