HRW welcomes in Algiers work of Morocco's reconciliation and equity commission

HRW deputy director for the MENA region Eric Goldstein hailed the work of IER conducted on past violations of human rights in Morocco, compared with Algeria which has not yet launched such an initiative on the events of 1990s.

Godstein, who was speaking at a HRW conference in Algiers after nearly a ten-year ban on its activities, said the work of the Moroccan reconciliation and equity commission "has revealed much about the years of lead".

"To date, Algeria has not initiated such an approach. Hopefully it will be considered", he said.

For HWR representative, the setting up of an "independent investigation commission" in Algeria is one of the mechanisms that could "provide a little truth to families who suffered so much".
