Germany has provided 50 million euros and supported more than one hundred projects with a view to fostering democratic change in the country, according to the  German foreign ministry.

Foreign Minister Westerwelle offered Germany’s assistance for the transition to democracy very soon after the fall of President Ben Ali on 12 February 2011. On 9 January 2012, he signed a Joint Declaration of Intent with his Tunisian counterpart Rafik Abdessalem. In the Declaration, the two sides agreed on a number of specific projects to strengthen democracy, the rule of law, media and civil society as well as vocational training, job creation and educational and cultural cooperation.

This year the German Government intends to provide an additional 100 million euros from the Federal Foreign Office budget to support the process of transformation in North Africa. More than half of it will benefit Tunisia. 60 per cent of the money is being used to support political and economic transformation, while the other 40 per cent is being dedicated to the education and research spheres. The German Government has pledged to convert Tunisian debts, releasing up to 60 million euros to be invested in jointly agreed projects and reforms

This is the first time that Germany has engaged in intergovernmental consultations with a Maghreb partner on this kind of in‑depth and comprehensive cooperation and it demonstrates strong and continuing support for Tunisia's democratic process.
