Friends of Morocco in EU Must Adopt Position in Support of Autonomy Initiative - Ambassador
The friends of Morocco in the European Union must adopt a position in support of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, following the example of the United States, said Morocco's Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Hanane Saadi.

The diplomat made the statement during a conference on "U.S. policy in the Middle East and North Africa," held virtually by the Center for Transatlantic Relations in Prague.

Saidi recalled, in that regard, the joint declaration signed between Morocco, the United States and Israel with regard to the American recognition of Morocco's full sovereignty over all of its Sahara, the resumption of diplomatic relations with Israel and the reaffirmation of the Kingdom's consistent position on the Palestinian question.

Morocco-US relations are rooted in history and encompass all areas of cooperation, she said, stressing that all previous US administrations have expressed their support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the settlement of the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

The Moroccan diplomat described as "courageous" and "clear" the US recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara as it clearly reflects the position of successive US administrations, as well as that of the majority of the international community.

The US position on the issue of the Kingdom's territorial integrity illustrates the wise and far-sighted leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, she said.

The diplomat also called on the Czech authorities to adopt a clear position on the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, in accordance with the distinguished relations between the two countries.

For his part, Daniel Meron, head of the Center for Transatlantic Relations, welcomed the resumption of relations between Morocco and Israel.

The US position on the Moroccan Sahara issue will not change with the new administration he assumed considering his deep knowledge of the Democratic Party and its members, both in the former and current US administrations.

For his part, MEP Jan Zaharadil welcomed the joint declaration signed between Morocco, the United States and Israel, stressing that the friends of Morocco should seize the opportunity of any debate initiated by some European parliamentary groups hostile to Morocco's territorial integrity to convince the European institutions and the governments of member states of the importance of moving forward towards a clear position in favor of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, given its strategic weight.
