France ‘supports negotiated and mutually acceptable settlement’ of Sahara issue

France “supports a negotiated and mutually acceptable settlement” of Sahara issue, “in accordance with the resolutions and parameters clearly outlined by the UN Security Council,” said French president François Hollande.

“Realism and the sense of compromise should make it possible to reach a political settlement to this protracted issue”, he told Algerian dailies El Watan and El Khabar.
 
He added that France is fully aware of the stake that the Sahara issue represents for the concerned populations, for Morocco and for Algeria, before reiterating that his country supports a negotiated and mutually acceptable solution, in accordance with the resolutions and parameters clearly defined by the UN Security Council.
 
The French head of state who is on a state visit to Algeria also argued that “realism and the sense of compromise should make it possible to reach a political solution to this protracted issue”, expressing his country’s readiness to help parties move forward to a solution.
