Foreign investments in Casablanca Stock Exchange: Europeans still leading

Casablanca - Europeans remained the first foreign investors in the Casablanca Stock Exchange during the past six months, according to the Deontological Council of Transferable Securities (CDVM).

Although their share has significantly dropped in favor of Middle Eastern investors since the sale of 53 % of Maroc Telecom's capital by Vivendi (France) to Etisalat (UAE), Europeans are in the lead with a share of 47.38 pc, said the CDVM in its latest report on foreign investment in Casablanca Stock Exchange in the 2nd half of 2014.

At the end of last year, investments by foreigners and Moroccans living abroad in listed shares rose to 152.5 billion dirhams, an increase of 9.54 pc compared to June 2014, representing 31.47 pc of market capitalization, compared to 30.49 pc in the first half of the same year, the source added.

The floating stock held by foreigners and Moroccans living abroad in market capitalization remains relatively low and ranged between 3.1 pc and 3.2pc during the same period.

According to the report, foreign investments in listed shares take the form of strategic participations. The share of these in the total amount of foreign investments in the second half of the year remained stable compared to the Jan-June 2014 and July-Dec. 2013 periods, accounting for 89.9 pc.

Meanwhile, foreign investments in Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) amounted to 1.38 billion dirhams up to December 2014, posting a 31 pc rise compared to 1.05 billion dirhams six months ago.
