A release of the Laayoune-Boujdour-Sakia El-Hamra region wilaya flatly denied ill-intended rumors that the law-enforcement agents broke into some houses, stressing that any law violation by the security forces will be heavily punished.

According to the source, some persons, who have often done this, tried to disrupt the UN official's visit by committing violence and looting and by damaging public and private property in order to provoke the security forces and accuse them, then of violence and of breaching their rights.

The release goes on that some 400 individuals, attempted in Saturday night to gather in the city's avenues and started throwing stones and Molotov cocktails and used burning tires to erect barricades.

The security forces have reacted to these provocations in the strict respect of the law, says the release.

As part of a tour in the region, the UN SG personal envoy for the Sahara visited Laayoune and Smara where he met local authorities, heads of tribes, elected officials and activists of the civil society.
