Fatal Traffic Accidents Down 1.83% in 2019, Minister Says

Rabat - The number of fatal traffic accidents decreased by 1.83% in 2019 compared to the year before, minister of Equipment, Transport, logistics and water, Abdelkader Amara, said Friday in Rabat. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Standing Committee on Road Safety, Amara said that nearly 3,010 fatal accidents were recorded last year in which 3.384 people died, down by 2.9% compared to 2018, while 8,417 others were seriously injured (-3.53%).

A total of 102,737 traffic accidents occurred in 2019, up by 6.9% in comparison with the year before, he added. Amara underlined the need to mobilize all stakeholders to end this scourge and achieve the objectives of the national road safety strategy for the period 2017-2026. 

This strategy is aimed at reducing the number of deaths in traffic accidents by 25% in 2021 and by 50% in 2026. The minister also stressed the importance of raising awareness, educating and informing the youth about road safety and encouraging them to adopt good habits from an early age.
