Casablanca - Fifty tons of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and related waste will leave on Tuesday the port of Casablanca, in order to be incinerated and disposed of in France by a company specialized in the treatment of waste pollutants, according to the United Nations Organization for Agriculture and Food (FAO) in Morocco.

The DDT is a persistent and highly toxic biochemical insecticide which accumulates in the food chain. Acquired in Morocco in the 80s to fight against malaria, these toxic chemicals and their packaging were now obsolete and dangerous to the environment and the public health, said FAO welcoming the collaboration of the ministry of health for securing the transport of these products.

This operation was also carried out in partnership with the WHO (World Health Organization) and the GEF (Global Environment Facility).

The FAO has financially and technically supported the Ministry to eliminate DDT in Morocco based on its management system of Stockpiles and in accordance with the requirements of the international conventions of Stockholm and Basel, two managing agreements environmentally sound of chemicals, hazardous wastes and other wastes.
