Electricity generation: Algeria will invest $ 30 billion by 2020, says Sonelgaz CEO Boutarfa
Algeria will invest $ 30 billion to produce 1,200 MW additional electricity per year by 2020, CEO of Sonelgaz Noureddine Boutarfa said on Monday in Algiers.

To meet a growing demand for electricity, about 10%, especially in summer, Sonelgaz will allocate nearly $ 30 billion for the production of 1200 MW per year by 2020," said Boutarfa at the 16th Energy Week, APS reports.
Some of this capacity will be reserved for renewable energy, said the CEO of Sonelgaz who said that the objectives of his group was to produce 40% of electricity from alternative energy by 2030.
"We firmly believe that the growth and development of our country is not possible without a massive investment in renewable energy, particularly solar energy. Algeria has the ambition to become a major player," he said.
Electricity generation should be between 75 and 80 TWh in 2020 and between 130 and 150 TWh in 2030, according to forecasts provided at this meeting by the research department of Sonelgaz group.
Boutarfa said that the programme of $ 80 billion, of which two thirds was allocated to renewable energy development and one third for the promotion of energy efficiency will install increased power from renewable sources by nearly 21,000 MW between 2011 and 2030.
The Council of Ministers selected Sonelgaz to take over the production of electricity through solar power in 2011
as it had already piloted the solar gas hybrid plant of Hassi R’Mel with a capacity of 150 MW and the Adrar wind farm (10 MW), and will work with the established government agencies New Energy Algeria (NEAL) and the
Algerian Energy Company (AEC) to coordinate the development of renewable energies in Algeria.
The most powerful type of solar power will be solar thermal, with a maximum capacity of 400 MW for one of them.For optimum efficiency, they will all be located in the southern regions, particularly in the prefectures of El Oued and Bechar.The countries of North Africa will spend 15 billion dollars by 2020, with the energy transition, to gradually free themselves from fossil fuels.
Morooco with MASEN , the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy has made renewable energy the corner stone of its energy strategy Tunisia is working on a solar generator project with a British led consortium NurEnergie. The German Desertec project also looks to develop a vast solar power generating network across the Sahara.
