Egypt votes for its President today
50 million registered Egyption voters are going to the polls today to elect a new President, early reports indicate a high turnout amid an atmosphere of excitement. Voting are beginning early to avoid the mid day heat.

The 13 candidates are headed by Ahmed Shafik and Amr Moussa on the secular side and Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood and Abdul Moneim Aboul Fotouh an indepenedent with strong support from salafist parties and secular groups.An outright win is unlikely and a presidential run off is slated for 16 and 17 June.
Egyptian's are electing a President but the consitution which will define his powers has not yet been written.
The main issue for voters where nearly half the population lives on 2 dollars a day is simple daily survival and the faltering economy. Security after months of lawlessness is also an issue.
The Supreme Armed Forces Council (SCAF) has promised to hand over power once a new president is elected but few believe that the Armed Forces will completely abandon its central role in the country, at least for the forseeable future.
The election result will have important regional significance in terms of the divide between the secular and islamist elements of society and the way forward for post Arab Spring North Africa.
