Economic freedom low in Mediterranean countries
Created by the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal, this index measures the economic freedom of 177 countries according to several criteria: trade, taxation, the size of the public sector, currency, finance, investment, corruption, property rights and the freedom to work according to the economic website Econostrum.

Jordan topped the Mediterranean countries in 33rd place. This is the only Mediterranean country to be considered, according to the foundation as "generally free" through "improved property law and its better control of public spending despite an increase in the level of perceived corruption" .

Deteriorating public expenditure control and freedom of trade outweighed the gains in terms of freedom of investment and labor in Morocco in 90th position ahead of Lebanon (91st place)  Tunisia (107th), Greece (117th) and Egypt (125th).

Algeria had the dubious distinction  of sharing bottom position sharing 145th place with Ethiopia and Laos, "in part because of the worsening of public spending and a reduction free trade. "

Libya and Syria were not evaluated by the index.
