ECOSOC in Geneva adopts resolution on proposed Europe-Africa permanent link

Geneva - The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted, Friday in Geneva, a draft resolution in which it welcomed the progress achieved in the proposed Europe-Africa permanent link across the Strait of Gibraltar and the establishment of an action plan in this area for the period 2013-2016.

In its resolution, the Council noted with satisfaction the progress of the studies on the project, including those on geological and geotechnical exploration, the studies on the technical and economic development that are underway.

ECOSOC reiterated call to the relevant organizations of the UN as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations specialized to take part in the ongoing studies and actions as part of the Europe-Africa permanent link project.

In addition, the Council paid tribute to the Economic Commission for Europe and the Economic Commission for Africa, for their work in preparing follow-up reports at the request of ECOSOC. The executive secretaries of the two Commissions were called, under the resolution, to continue to actively contribute to the monitoring of the project.

In a joint statement on the occasion, Morocco and Spain said they were "confident that the fixed link project will continue to receive the attention and support of the international community, as it will have positive economic, political, social and cultural impacts on the entire region.
