Driss El Yazami : Morocco in implementation stage of constitutional provisions on human rights

Paris - Morocco is carrying on with determination the reform process in the field of human rights through the implementation of the relevant legal instruments set out in the new constitution, said Sunday in Paris Driss El Yazami, President of the National Council for Human rights (CNDH).

El Yazami, who was speaking at a meeting on "Human Rights in Morocco" organized by the the Arabe World Institute (IMA) in partnership with CNDH, stressed that the elaboration of organic laws and the legal instruments for the implementation of the Constitution must take as long as necessary given the spirit of compromise and consensus which marks this process.

The head of the Moroccan human rights watchdog recalled the many reform projects launched in the Kingdom to promote human rights, including the establishment of the Constitutional Court, the military justice reform, the press draft law and the Kingdom's new migration policy.

El Yazami also stressed Morocco's ratification of the Optional Protocol to the International Convention against Torture and the country's project of setting up a national mechanism for the prevention of torture in accordance with the aforesaid protocol.

For his part, the President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) Karim Lahidji noted that Morocco launched several projects in the field of human rights and opened its door to a number of international NGOs to visit the Kingdom's prisons, expressing his hope that these reforms will contribute to strengthening the process of democratic transition in the Kingdom.
