Django Sissoko named as Mali Prime Minister

Malian interim President Diouncounda Traore has appointed a new Prime Minister, less than 24 hours after his predecessor Cheikh Modibo Diarra was forced to resign by the military.

Django Sissoko was the Secretary General at the Presidency from 2008 - 2011  with the rank of Minister and has served as the World Bank  Governor  in Mali 1990-1991.He was Director of the Office of the Prime Minister with the rank of Minister from 2002 - 2008. He has been Mediator for the Republic since 16 May 2011 concerned with the democratic transition in Mali.His appointment was announced on State Television.

The UN and many countries have condemned the forced resignation of Cheikh Modibo Diarra and the UN Security Council has threatened targetted sanctions. Captain Amadou Haya Sanogo said that the Prime Minister was not forced to resign and the military merely facilitated the resignation. Some twenty troops were reported by AFP  to have broken down the door of  the Prime Minister's residence and taken him by force to Kati barracks.He is now reported to be under house arrest according to local media.
