It is a "very important" operation, said Diaz during a press conference after the meeting of the Council of Spanish ministers. This cell is "the most active in Spain and one of the most active cells in Europe," he said, noting that it sought to "indoctrinate and send suspected terrorists in conflict zones such as Syria and Mali.

" The arrested individuals include the head of the network, a Belgian-born Spaniard, who was arrested with two other individuals who hold the French citizenship, said the Spanish minister, who also noted the arrest of a Tunisian national in Malaga (southern Spain), who was involved in documents forgery, and three Moroccans arrested by the Moroccan security services. The leader of this cell is a person who is "well known in Europe for international terrorism," said the Spanish minister.

A statement from the Moroccan Interior Ministry, issued on Friday, said that the Moroccan security services, in coordination with Spanish peers, have dismantled a terrorist cell, led by an extremist Spanish national, and which was operating in the Moroccan northern cities of Laroui and Melillia as well as in the Spanish southern city of Malaga.
