Dioncounda Traore is holding talks to form a unity government in line with Ecowas's demands. Perhaps for the first time all sections of the political spectrum in Bamako may be consulted. .

The failure to hold elections has meant that the people of Mali have been denied their right to free and democratic expression and until free elections take place any solution wil have to be a temporray one. President Traore, the former Speaker of Pareliament  has his own party Adema. He clearly has his enemies which led to the mob attack on him permitted by his army  presidential guards.

Captain Amadou Haya Sanogo the former junta leader stood down as head of state but still retains a measure of control and influence and powerful backers. Alledged supporters of the former coup are still being arrested and Amnesty international. A government of National Unity may have to include him.

Prime Minister Cheick Modibo Diarra founded his own party the Rally for Development in Mali in  March 2011. He was a presidential candidate for the April 2012 elections which did not take place because of the coup. His distiguished career was mostly outside Mali and he turned to politics late. He may be regarded by some as an outsider.  A coalition of parties recently demanded his resignation for failing to find a solution to the crisis. He has steadfastly refused to resign.

However although President Traoré altered the structure of government by appointing a High Counci of State and taking over  many responsibilities himself, he did not sack his Prime Minister. If a new government of National Unity is formed he may be required to resign but some unconformed reports suggest he might be reppointed by
President Traoré.

One local newspaper L'Indicateur du Renouveau called on Malians to support President Traoré. There is remarkably little coverage of the political situation in Bamako. President Traoré's consultations must necessarily be confidential but he has to produce a government of National Unity soon. It may however be reluctant to invite the Ecowas force into Mali according to some local commenators.
