Covid-19: Morocco Records 221 New Cases, 301 Recoveries over Past 24 Hours

Rabat - A total of 221 new cases of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) were recorded in Morocco over the past 24 hours while 301 Covid-19 patients have recovered over the given period, the ministry of health announced Sunday. The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country rises to 17,236 while the number of cured people increases to 14,921, the head of the department of epidemic diseases at the Ministry of Health, Hind Ezzine, told reporters, noting that the recovery rate stands at 86.6%. Four new coronavirus-related deaths were recorded over the past day, taking the death toll to 273, she said, adding that the fatality rate has reached 1.6%.

According to the official, more than 91% of the new COVID-19 cases were detected through contact-tracing. The new cases were recorded in the regions of Casablanca-Settat (76), Fez-Meknes (62), Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima (49), Marrakech-Safi (18), the Oriental (5), Rabat-Salé-Kenitra (4), Guelmim-Oued Noun (3), Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra (2), Draa-Tafilalet (1) and Souss-Massa (1). A total of 992,090 suspected cases were excluded following negative tests since the start of the outbreak, she pointed out.

Contact-tracing has concerned so far a total of 97,415 people, including 13,323 who are still under medical monitoring, the official pointed out, adding that the number of active cases has reached 2,042, including 31 patients in a critical condition. The Ministry of Health urges citizens to coply with precautionary measures, including wearing protective masks, respecting physical distancing and downloading the "wiqaytna" tracing application to curb the spread of the pandemic.
