The latest airports deal will see the fund pay £450m ($726m) for a 10% stake in Heathrow Airport Holdings Ltd, which was previously known as BAA Ltd.

In France regional authorities from northeastern France signed a historic deal in China this week that will give thousands of Chinese companies a gateway into the European marketplace and  create 3,000 much-needed local jobs.

China’s direct investment in Europe continues to rise with figures released in June revealing total input was worth $10 billion in the year 2011. A study cited by the Financial Times suggested Chinese spending in Europe could rise to as much as $500 billion by 2020.

Huawei  Technologies said it was going to invest £1.3bn expanding its UK operations, according to the BBC.

Qatar has also been investing extensively in the UK and France and whilst the investment is welcome concerns
have been raised. As the recession continues assets are  being acquired at a lower cost. The Chinese market is
increasingly important for Germany, emphasised by Chancellor Angela Merkel's second visit to China this year with the  largest German business delegation ever, The Wall Street Journal noted in August.

The longer term effects of this change in investment patterns have yet to become fully apparent.
