In a statement following the announcement that the former army general, who stepped down in order to run for office, took 96.91 pct of the votes, Foreign Secretary William Hague congratulated Al-Sisi, saying that Britain "looks forward to working with his government to strengthen the broad and productive relationship between both our peoples.

"We look to President-elect Sisi to take steps to implement the rights contained in Egypt's constitution by opening up political space, especially with regard to freedom of expression and association." Britain believes that "the best way for Egyptians to achieve the goals of the 25 January revolution of 2011 is through an inclusive political process in which all groups can participate," he added.

"We urge Egypt's leaders to ensure that Egypt's transition leads towards accountable and democratic governance, underpinned by strong and accountable institutions, he added, pledging UK support of the Egyptian people "in their aspirations for greater economic opportunities, political participation, freedom and rights." He also said that Birtain was "proud to be Egypt's largest foreign investor" and that it would "increase support for education, research and scholarships, to strengthen prosperity in Egypt and the links between our two countries." Arab neighbours, Jordan's King Abdullah II hailed the election of Al-Sisi and the trust bestowed upon him by the Egyptian people.

"We are confident of your wisdom and ability to support your nation's path of building in the present and in the future according to a manner that is befitting for the dear Egyptian people and their leading position," a Royal Court statement said quoting the monarch.

"I assure our commitment to enhancing historic brotherly bonds and ties, based on cooperation, that unite our two nations and peoples, and continuing coordination on the various issues related to our Arab and Islamic nations." The statement mentioned furthermore that the King had phoned the Egyptian President-elect in order to congratulate him on his success.

During the conversation, the King had said that the event "would usher in a new stage of building, development and modernity," and that it would "lead to improved security, stability and national conciliation, in addition to regaining Egypt's leading position on the Arab and regional stages." Words of congratulations were also delivered by Egypt's western Arab neighbours Morocco, with King Mohammad VI wishing President-elect Al-Sisi all the success in his new role.

He described the elections as "historic" and the current stage as a "critical" one, expressing hope the new leader "achieves the aspired spirit of amity, tranquility, growth and development in the midst of security and stability." He described Al-Sisi as a "veteran statesman" and a "wise leader", who has "an honest devotion to a great country." King Mohammad also pledged Morocco's commitment to its existing deep relations with Egypt, and maintaining joint efforts aimed at enhancing these ties for the benefit of both sides, the Arab world and Islamic nations.
