Speaking on the occasion, Benkirane stressed that the issue of road safety is a major challenge for all stakeholders, given the serious damage and casualties caused by traffic accidents, according to a statement from the presidency of the government.

In addition to their social and heavy economic impact, accidents are estimated to cost 14 billion dirhams per year, or 2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), said the head of government. This, he said, involves all stakeholders, especially the government, in taking appropriate measures in this regard.

According Benkirane, the repressive approach adopted by the administration in this area can not alone cope with this problem, calling on officials of the Department of Infrastructure and Transport to help strengthen the role of the administration in reducing road accidents.

In the same vein, he emphasized the determination of the Executive to overcome the current situation and to work alongside all stakeholders to improve Morocco's ranking in terms of road accidents, the statement added.

The meeting was an opportunity to present the various development indicators of road safety and for Morocco to consider a series of proposals for the optimal implementation of policies and measures of the Action Strategy 2012-2016 including those related to the consolidation of the roles of government at all levels.
