Benkirane denies any increase in commodity prices

The prices of commodities have shown no increase, the head of government, Abdelilah Benkirane, said on Monday at a meeting of members of the House of Representatives.

Asked about the high cost of living and the preservation of the purchasing power of citizens, Benkirane denied any increase in prices of commodities calling "rumours" circulating information about it.
 

Responding to questions from opposition MPs, Mr Benkirane said that only the price of tomatoes, poultry and eggs have increased slightly due to climate disruption and rising food prices on the international market livestock.

Prices of commodities, such as butane, sugar, oil, flour and bread have shown no increase, he stressed, noting also that other products, such as onions, potatoes and fruits, were in abundant supply and were experiencing price declines.
 

Prices "could have reached record levels due to climatic conditions and international economic conditions, including fluctuations in the dollar if the government had not intervened at two levels: on the one hand through the grant commodities, and the other by strengthening the purchasing power of Moroccan families, which required exceptional efforts of the government, surpassing its financial rating, "said the Head of Government.
 

This session lasted one hour and had been carefully prepared at the Conference of Presidents group. The goal:wasnot to give in to monotony "with sessions where the head of government meets for hours with the same issue treated differently", said Ahmed Zaidi, President of the Socialist Group in the Lower House to the "Liberation" in its edition of 8 February. "We decided that there will be only one question to Mr. Benkirane," that the rising cost of living, said Ahmed Zaidi .

 

At the end of his speech Mr Benkirane stressed the government's efforts to ensure price stability and increase revenue for Moroccan families, which resulted, according to the head of government, not only in preserving their purchasing power, but also in the improvement and increased domestic consumption, he concluded.
