Bardo Museum opens

The completion of the refurbishment and extension works of the museum started in March 2009. The Bardo opened its doors on Tunisia's Republic day 25 July.

The project for the redevelopment and extension of the Bardo Museum,  cost  19 million  Tunisian  dinars, involving the creation of new spaces on an area of approximately 9 000 sq m, the redevelopment of existing spaces and the modernisation of exhibition areas. The total area of the museum is now 20 thousand sq m.

The redevelopment and extension of the Bardo National Museum has also doubled the number of artefacts on display (8 000 items now) and brought the capacity to a million visitors.
 
Moreover, the refurbished  museum now offers premises dedicated to hosting cultural events; and  the new conference room,  which is set to host national and international scientific meetings.
 
Unique in the scope of its treasures, the museum, which doubled its surface area, boasts objects from prehistory, the Phoenician period and Punic and Numidian times, as well as Roman, Christian and Islamic artifacts.It is renowned for its Roman classical mosaics which is the largest collection of its kind in the world.

Among the most prized works in the collection is “The Triumph of Neptune”, a 2nd century mosaic that measures 13 by eight meters (43 by 26 feet).The restoration of the Bardo was decided in 2003, and work began in 2009, as part of a program to restore Tunisia’s cultural heritage, with funding from the World Bank.
