Ban's statements could undermine his role of facilitator in solving Sahara issue, FOPREL president

Rabat - Statements by UNSG Ban Ki-Moon on the Sahara could undermine his role of facilitator in solving the conflict, said president of the Forum of Presidents of the Legislative Bodies of Central America and the Caribbean Basin (FOPREL) Mario Taracena Diaz-Sol.
"Statements by the UNSG on the Sahara issue are appalling and unacceptable, and could undermine his role of facilitator in solving this conflict," Taracena Diaz-Sol told MAP on the sidelines of FOPREL's 17th extraordinary session held on March 14-16 in Morocco which is a observer member within this regional forum.

By acting this way, the UN official has given a hard blow to all diplomatic efforts made by the international community to reach a political solution to the conflict over the Sahara issue, said the FOPREL's head who is also speaker of Guatemala's congress.

Taracena Diaz-Sol said that parliaments of Central America and the Caribbean islands decided to notify the UNSG that, with such a stance and bias, Ban cannot effectively play a role in the UN-brokered facilitation to solve conflicts and crises.

This initiative by the FOPREL is part of support for efforts by Morocco to defend the Sahara issue, he added.
