At Whose Expense and for What ?
The Tunisians living in France celebrated the Tunisian revolution on 15 January 2011.They were joined by other Arabimmigrants andmany French people who remembered the spirit of the demonstrations in France in 1968 which also changed a generation with young people digging up paving stones to fight for their freedom.

Minorities elsewhere such as England also celebrated to a lesser extent but in France it was special, the Tunisian Revolution called to the Arab Soul of France.The French were a little taken aback to see the fixed relations they had known so long with the Ben Ali regime changed overnight. The "Arab Exception" had changed

The French establishment hesitated somewhat and in the coming months the religious anti islamic prejuidce came to the fore.This was part of the insecurity brought on by the European recession and France was also mired in the military action in the Libyan revolution and its aftermath. On the side of Tunisians in France they were unable to reassure those who had crossed the sea to find a new life not realising that the recession had reduced the economies of Europe to chaos leading to chronic unemployment.
The government circular reminding 13,000 Tunisian students that after finishing their studies they had to go home emphasised that finding a new life in France was no longer possible.
Tunisian immigrants felt betrayed as if France had turned away from its traditions of humanism.It was as if the contributions to French society by Tunisian immigrants counted for nothing.Was this a sop to the French right headed by Marine Le Pen during the elections?
The French recognise the continuing instability and disorder which charaterised the Arab Spring and perhaps fear for their investments which they cannot sell. The French language and humanistic traditions are giving way toa clash of cultures and religions.
Francois Hollande has understood this and his actions at the moment are probably more tactical tha strategic on his part.
He has surely understood that those who choose to study in France are marked in their culture and use of language by this duality. So that they form a new identity different from their origins.The French language feels it is threatened by new influences.
