An arsenal seized by the police in Marseille

A total of 27 guns different calibres, including Kalashnikov and Uzi, and 150 kilos of ammunition were discovered during an operation in the twelfth district of the city. Attention has focused recently on islamists but weapons are readily available in France.

A total of 27 guns of all calibres, as well as 150 kilos of ammunition were seized during a punch operation conducted by the gendarmerie in the twelfth arrondissement of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhone)., Le Figaro reports.

The suspect, officially a masonry contractor, concealed in his arsenal quite opulent villa, in which the soldiers found eight such weapons of war in perfect working order and spare parts capable of producing five assault rifles. "The alleged trafficker had concealed his panoply of war in a real hiding under a staircase, whose narrow door gave access to a double wall," says Colonel Jacques Deacon, head of the Research Section (CTs) who led the Marseillle investigation.The suspect already arrested in 2010

The investigations, conducted long-term, came after the arrest in February 2011 with the support of the GIGN supergendarmes two thugs involved in extortion. Three sizes, two Kalashnikovs and a Glock automatic pistol, had been found in searches.

Aged 51, the "dealer" clandestine arrested Thursday morning, claiming to be a collector, had already been apprehended by the  Central Office of fight against organized crime (OCLCO) in 2010. At the time, the specialized services of the Central Directorate of Judicial Police confiscated 16 weapons.

The dubious "collector", who was send parcels by post and was sentenced to an eighteen months suspended sentence in February 2012, was indicted as part of an open procedure for criminal conspiracy.

Since the beginning of the year, the city itself was the scene of 14 settling, often resulted in firearms.There are  There are thought to be at least 4,000 illegal weapons in France, according to La Figaro.

Most of the weapons seized are in the Paris suburbs (Val de Marne and Seine-Saint-Denis in the lead) and Marseille. The majority came from Eastern Europe, relics of long years of conflict that bloodied the Balkan region. Kalashnikovs are also from the African continent, where many war zones remain," stated Yves Gollety, president of the trade association of dealers in France to le figaro.

In a report of the parliamentary commission on guns in France, published in 2010, the prosecutor pointed  Nice "the relative ease with which (...) individuals may purchase firearms in Europe." Traffic even easier, the deputies explained the report, by "the exchanges that allow the generalization of the Internet". The black market, a Kalashnikovis trading at best around 3000 euro, but prices can go down depending on the condition of the weapon up to 250 euros.
