The presidential debate revolved around two topics, America and the Middle East, writes Thomas Friedman in an editorial for the New York Times. He contrasts the pluralism and trust in American public life with its total absence in the Middle East. Muslims are killing muslims.

He laments the absence of pluralism and the prevalence of “rule or die” politics as the dominant trend in Arab Muslim politics, there is he says,no trust and a modern state and an innovative economy cannot function without it. To illustrate his point on pluralism he points to the presidential contest between a black president whose grandfather was a muslim  and a mormon. Radical plurilalism is the secret sauce of  America, he asserts.

However neither the President nor the Republican party are perfect and America cannot afford another four years of partisan gridlock. He rates the  president's foreign policy as not bad compared to the confrontational policies of President Geoge W. Bush, but with the collapse of the European Union and the Arab nation State a  resilient policy is needed.America,he argues needs to be internally strong to fulfil its role as a global conciliator and not to sucumb to  economic vulnerability. The USA has to solve its economic problems and it requires a president who will challenge the country "to face big hard issues together ,not tack with public opinion " and it will need an electorate who will value such leadership he concludes.
