Algiers not ready to grant Morocco the "gift" of open borders without "consideration"

The French daily La Croix on Tuesday focuses on the impact of the "symbolic" visit in Algeria of the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and of the reprochment of relations between the two countries, noting however that Algiers would not be prepared to give Morocco the "gift" of open borders without "consideration".

The controversial idea, it continued in Algiers is that open borders would be a gift to the Moroccan economy and it should not be done without consideration", the newspaper said in reference to the Sahara issue.

In addition to this question, which was not discussed during interviews Saad Eddine El Othmani  had with its Algerian counterparts, "other contentious issues are still on the table,"the newspaper said in an article entitled"Reconciliation between Morocco and Algeria moves slowly."

The paper emphasizes, however, that El Othmani "symbolically travelled to Algiers for his first destination abroad" and that the Moroccan press appears "more enthusiastic than his Algerian counterpart" on the prospects of this encounter.

The thaw in relations which began in the first half of 2011 between the two countries is "very fragile," said Samir Delali of the University of Oran, recalling that last August, "the kidnapping of three European humanitarian workers in  the Sahrawi refugee camp in Tindouf almost  derailed everything, Moroccan officials have seized on  the event to boost the charge of complicity between a wing of the Polisario (Sahrawi resistance) and AQIM (Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb). "

"If anyone would be convinced that there was no revolutionary process in Morocco and Algeria - in contrast to Tunisia and Libya - it is sufficient to observe the resistance of these two regimes in their approach to each other. In Tunis and Tripoli, there is already talk of an imminent customs union"said Delali.
