Algerian diplomat reported executed by Mujao

Dimanche 2 Septembre 2012

Following threats to kill one of the four remaining hostages from the Algerian consulate in Gao and the video of one of the captives pleading for his life, the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (Mujao) said it had "executed" Tahar Touati after Algeria failed to respond to its ultimatum to free three of its members.
Algerian diplomat reported executed by Mujao
The Algerian authorities say they are trying to verify the claim. If true it marks an escalation in Algeria's ongoing conflict  with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Algeria and a refusal to negotiate with AQIM and Mujao in Mali.  Mujao has threatened further action against Algeria.

Three Algerian hostages, including the Consul remain in Mujao's hands. Three  other hostages from the consulate  were released in July. Mujao seems to be increasingly prominent and its forces have  taken Douentza  which is 800 kilometers northeast of the capital, Bamako. It is only 190 kilometers from Mopti, which marks the line-of-control held by the Malian military.
