The convoy carried 50 tons of foodstuffs and medicines, as the air forces took over the task of transporting the aid from Boufarik military airport, to the city of Bordj Badji Mokhtar, and allocated two aircrafts for this purpose. While the aid will be transferred to Kidal by land, by a convoy of trucks.

The Algerian aid convoy will cover a distance of 400 km to reach Kidal amid difficult weather conditions, due to    severe heat, and the rugged terrain.

Head of the Red Crescent convoy to Kidal, Dr. Adel Ghabouli, told Echorouk; "It is the first time, the aid of the Algerian Red Crescent to Kidal is transfered. Last week we launched an aid convoy to Gao, as we went there from the capital, Bamako, and previously we send a similar convoy for the refugees in Timbuktu".

A Red Cross conference was recently held in Algiers with the aim of coordinating the Red Cross response to the refugee crisis in the Sahel. This bold and courageous action deliver urgent medical supplies  to Kidal comes in the context  of deaths and illness  due to cholera in the area . The chaos due to the islamist's of Ansar Dine and Al Qaeda affiliates including Mujao ,Boko Haram and others is preventing food aid and medical support from getting through to the civilian populations .

Thousands are still fleeing the repressive regime of the islamic extremists and over 200,000 have been displaced from Mali into neighbouring countries. If the  drought continues crops will not be planted and a swarm of locusts is now affecting Mali and Niger.

The suffering of the local populations who are experiencing malnourishment and sickness is akin to the worst cases of ethnic cleansing seen in recent times.
