Algeria's fiftieth anniversary of Independence.
Speaking of Algeria's achievements over 50 years of independence on the economic front the  development of the energy sector with Sonotrach the state oli and gas company is outsanding.Algeria has the tenth-largest reserves of natural gas in the world and is the sixth-largest gas exporter. It ranks 16th in  oil reserves. Thanks to strong hydrocarbon revenues, Algeria has a cushion of $173 billion in foreign currency reserves and a large hydrocarbon stabilization fund. In addition, Algeria's external debt is extremely low at about 2% of GDP.In today's
world of economic crisis this puts Algeria in a strong position to weather the economic storm.

Algeria has been a  distinguished leader in the non alligned movement and in Africa and has created huge infrastructure projects including the East West Highway.Algeria is a major player on the African continent and in North Africa and can play a leading role in the revival of Arab Maghreb Union if its dispute with Morocco can be resolved.

The great achievement of independence from 132 years of French colonial rule in 1962 was a triumph despite the loss of a millionlives, traumatised by the most brutal colonial war and terrible infighting Algeria emerged only to face a civil war in 1992after the decision to annul the elections which would have seen a victory for the islamic FIS party. Between 150,000 to 200,000 civilians died and terrorist actions albiet low level are still going on with AQIM and other groups. Few nations have suffered such a long period of sustained violence.

To have come through this is cause for celebration . The reconciliation policy of President  Abdelaziz criticised at the time, worked to heal the deep wounds in society and is perhaps his greatest achievement.

Algeria  now faces the  regional challenge of the Sahel  situation where terrorists, Al Qaeada in the Islamic Maghreb amongst them have established a base in Northern Mali which could destabalise the Sahel and the Maghreb. The region looks to Algeria as its leading military power its aid to resolve the crisis.

Now a young generation which does not remember 1962 is looking for jobs and a better future which is a huge challenge for the Algerian government. The calls to diversify the economy from hydrocarbons are being heeded but progress is slow and the heavy hand of Algerian bureaucracy and corruption still blunts Algeria's efforts to modernise its economy and provide jobs and education for its youth.

However Algeria's 50th Anniversary is a proud moment for a great nation and for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who will stand down at the next presidential election in 2014 when as he has said a new generation will take over to face the challenges of the  future.
