"I can officially say that President Bouteflika will be a candidate in the presidential election (set for April 17) and he will announce his candidacy at the appropriate time," Saadani was quoted as saying by the official APS news agency.

"The grassroots across the entire national territory and all structures of the party have endorsed the candidacy of the party's (honorary) chairman (Bouteflika) for a new term," he added.

Bouteflika, who was first elected in 1999, was re-elected in 2004 and 2009 for five-year terms.

So far, there are four political parties have openly called on Bouteflika to run for a fourth term, despite his health condition.

The president, 76, suffered a transient ischemic attack in April of last year. He was then airlifted to Val-de-Grace military hospital in Paris for treatment for about three months.

Recently, Bouteflika underwent a routine medical check-up in a French hospital.

During his absence, the opposition parties urged to apply Article 88 of the constitution, which stipulates that the head of the upper house of the parliament should take over power, temporarily, in the event of the death or incapacity of the president.

However, the government rebuffed such claims, and kept assuring that Bouteflika is recovering and would return homeland to assume his duty.
