Algeria has made every effort to help refugees in the Sahel region, said Saturday Abdourrahmane Cisse, president of Mali Red Cross.
Algeria has spared no effort to help refugees in Sahel

"Algeria had taken the initiative to help destitute population in Kidal before the conflict broke out in northern Mali, and today as the humanitarian situation has worsened, Algeria has spared no effort to provide aid assistance to the populations who fled to border areas," Cisse told APS on the sidelines of the National Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations of the sub-Sahel region, in Algiers.

"Algeria sent substantial aid to Malian refugees, and also for Mauritania and Burkina-Faso, and intends to do the same for Niger in the coming days," he added.

The situation in northern Mali is expected to even worsen with the arrival of new refugees fleeing the crisis in the region.

"There are currently over 200,000 displaced, including nearly 100,000 on the border areas with Algeria, but their number is expected to further increase, hence the need for more aid," he said.

In September Morocco sent 14 tons of foodstuffs to assist Niger in dealing with Malian refugees. Both Algeria and Morocco are maintaing aid distribution to the distressed areas in the Sahel  which are suffering from long term drought and malnutrition.
