Algeria cancels an arms market worth $ 3 billion with the U.S.

Algeria cancelled a market arms deals with major U.S. corporations worth $ 3 billion in the second half of 2011, due to U.S. restrictions including halving the list of purchases and increased maintenance costs which are estimated at $ 100 million per year.

The Algerian Minister of Defence has decided to definitively abandon several records of purchases of weapons and war equipment worth U.S. $ 3 billion, between 2010 and 2011, after negotiations that lasted more one year.

An informed source said the defense ministry had decided in late 2009 to begin negotiations with U.S. armament companies for the renewal of certain parts for the Algerian navy and equip them with safety equipment, as part of the renewal and organization of the Algerian war fleet, according to elkhabar.com.

The proposed contract included the purchase of two American frigates, 30 Chinook helicopter type, and navigation equipment to help ships safely navigate the high seas, coding equipment and communications as part of agreements security for the protection of maritime trade threats of terrorist operations in the western Mediterranean. But the contract was cancelled a few months after the visit of a delegation comprising of engineers, experts and negotiators of the Ministry of Defence, our source said that the reason for the cancellation of the contract was the reservations expressed by American political parties on the sale of certain equipment of shipping on the high seas to Algeria on the grounds that the sale of such equipment threatened the security of U.S. allies and the maritime balance of power. The same source said that the contract had been canceled by the Algerian part of the reduction by half of the U.S. portion of the shopping list, and the imposition of restrictions on the use of other military equipment.

The source added that Jewish groups in the United States  were activated in the context of the Israeli lobby in the U.S. have been lobbying the Obama administration to prevent the finalization of the market for military equipment for which Algeria was negotiating with U.S. weapons companies since 2010.

Senior Algerian officials considered that the halving of  the applications was a breach of commitments to supply arms to Algeria as part of counter-terrorism they indicated that the cost of maintenance of U.S. equipment that had to be purchased has contributed to the abandonment of the market, after the costs of coaches and teams of experts in maintenance were estimated at more than 100 million dollars a year.

The  joint Sahel forces command at CEMOC in Tamenrasset needs attack helicopters and transport helicopters  to transport troops.
