Algeria and the Mali backwater: Now What?

Mardi 15 Janvier 2013

Since the beginning of this case in Mali, Algeria's position has been neither clear nor consistent nor the result of a high-level strategic thinking writes the Algerian daily Le Matin. Algiers seems to have been overtaken by events in nearby Mali, it adds.
Algeria and the Mali backwater: Now What?
Abdelkader Messahel the Minister in charge of Maghrebian and African affairs is blamed for elevating Ansar Dine to the status of an essential player in the Malian crisis where as the article says it is a puppet organisation whose only purpose was to scuttle the MNLA call for the independence of Azawad it is also closely connected with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and its associates.

It observes that "'a few old men overtaken by events and obsessed with their political survival " have transformed Algerian foreign policy into a laughing stock in the eyes of the world. Algerian diplomacy confused the west who regarded Algeria asa regional leader whereas its main concern was to secure its own borders. It wasinevitable that outside forces would eventually intervene. The article blames Algeria for trusting the devious Iyad Ag Ghali leader of Ansar Dine which it implies was created with Algerian support.

The article reviews the role of France, America and Qatar in the Malian crisis and suggests a strong element of collusion between them. It views the possible appearance of Moroccan troops in Mali  in a supporting role with horror. If Algeria had assumed the regional role it claimed with the leadership of the Sahel forces based in Tamanrasset and acted decisively to combat the terrorist forces, including AQIM which is an Algerian terrorist group that  has installed itself in Mali, it might have escaped the ignominious results of its failed diplomacy in the Sahel.
